This past month of July trading has been especially fun, due to two notable short sells I made in the first two weeks of the month. Within the coming weeks, the Fox on Stocks homepage will have a “My Trades” feature column that will keep readers updated on the most recent trades I’ve made. But because that feature is not here just yet, I wanted to share with you two killer trades that I made earlier this month.

Even though the market is currently positive for the month of July, S&P 500 is up .88% from 1960.96 to 1978.34, it’s been choppy and wavy all the way through and hasn’t been continuously heading in a single direction. These chops and waves provided me with great opportunities to play the pullbacks and the jumps of various stocks.

We are amidst the Stock Market Earnings Season and this coming week is the week of the release of many Tech Stocks Earnings Reports. Who are the big tech stocks to watch out for this week? Apple (AAPL), Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), and Netflix (NFLX) are among the important ones.

Last week’s market was bumpy due to the global political issues in the Middle East. This coming week should see a recovery and a smoothing, as long as nothing dramatic happens, either globally or nationally. Q2 2014 earnings season, among other strong market influences, have so far been causing the markets to move up in a positive path.

Can Yahoo (YHOO) Compete with Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX), and YouTube (GOOG)?

After she overslept and went to an important meeting two hours late, Marissa Mayer was chided for her tardiness on Twitter via @tiredmarissa and all over the media.

Will Marrissa Mayer and Yahoo be tardy to the video-streaming party … or after Yahoo Acquires RayV, Can Yahoo (YHOO) Compete with Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX), and YouTube (GOOG) ?

First, who is RayV and why did Yahoo buy them? There is not a lot of information out there about RayV. From what I could find, RayV is unique, interactive viewing media player/web platform that allows users to interact, browse, chat, do whatever across any IP device without disrupting the highest quality viewing experience.

Shonn Campbell and Matt LaCoco talk about the magical potion of probability and to what extent trading is, in fact, gambling. They discuss how traders are just in denial about being gamblers, asserting that traders aren’t much different from professional poker players or card counters who use statistics to make their money. Shonn and Matt suggest that trading is merely card counting—with candles! They also talk about “the gut feeling” and how it’s essentially the intuition of probability.

As the second quarter comes to an end, my top 10 list of dumb investment ideas is filling up. All of these would be fairly foolish in any year. (Feel free to explain to me why these are not dumb, or to suggest investing ideas that are even more reckless or just plain silly.)

Note that these aren’t on the list simply because they lost money; the nature of investing is that some significant percentage of trades is going to lose money. That is a given, and it is the reason you should be a diversified investor. Smart asset allocation includes U.S. stocks, as well as those from developed countries and emerging markets. It is also why your bond portfolio should be a mix of corporates, treasuries, munis, etc.
