Amplefuture goes live with end-to-end DRM solution and predicts that it is the key to a galaxy of new mobile content

Amplefuture, one of the UK’s largest distributors and aggregators of mobile content, today announced that it had made an innovative digital rights management (“DRM”) service live for all of its clients. The service, called Trusted Digital Service Provider (“Trusted DSP”), uses a Beep Science DRM system to secure end-to-end digital content distribution across mobile networks with fair rewards for content owners, artists and service providers. The Trusted DSP service is now delivering digital rights management of branded mobile content sold to the public through all of Amplefuture’s clients. Amplefuture’s clients include the Internet Service Providers serving 65% of the UK’s on-line population and many High Street Retailers, as well as Music Artists, such as Westlife and Dido. Amplefuture is the Master License Holder for Trusted DSP in the UK and Ireland.

As a result of this service, Amplefuture will gain access to a wider range of content such as mobile games, ringtones, realtones, mobile wallpapers and screensavers. The service will also attract many more recognised media brands to join.

Amplefuture is the largest and most successful of the “white label” mobile content providers in the UK. In fact, anyone who has bought a ringtone from a well-known consumer brand is likely to have bought it from a company using Amplefuture to provide its service. The term “white label” means that Amplefuture provides a fully managed service for selling mobile content under the brands of such well-known media companies as AOL, Sky, Freeserve, Tiscali, Telewest, and MSN, as well as BMG recording artists like Westlife and Britney. Amplefuture also provides and manages the retail solutions for Phones4U as well as those used by M4 Ltd to supply mobile content to retailers such as The Link, Tesco and Carphone Warehouse.

Beep Science AS, a leading mobile Digital Rights Management (DRM) provider, offers the Trusted DSP Digital Rights Management service.

The Trusted DSP service is significant because it offers confidence to mobile content owners, such as music artists, games companies and photographic image owners. They now know that when Amplefuture sells content they are complying with a system of Digital Rights Management that protects the suppliers’ Intellectual Property Rights and provides independent confirmation of Amplefuture’s content sales. In addition the Trusted DSP system prevents unauthorised distribution of mobile content across mobile networks from any forms of content piracy, including unauthorised person-to- person file sharing. The system also supports the Open Mobile Alliance digital rights management standards that control how the content can be used once it has been received by the handset.

“We must make sure that content rights owners, our clients and ourselves are getting fair reward for enabling digital content distribution on mobile phones. Trusted DSP helps to achieve the transparency and trust that you need to achieve this,” said Derek Byrne, managing director of Amplefuture.

Amplefuture has also signed the first UK Master License Agreement with Beep Science, which indicates Amplefuture’s confidence in the service and a commitment to promote the Trusted DSP service to content owners and other service providers.

The Premium Mobile Content market in Western Europe is forecast to be worth US$ 10bn by 2007 (source: Ovum). Many content owners such as TV production companies, animators, music companies and even individual artists would like to be able to enter the market, but have found that the previous lack of a credible DRM system is a significant barrier. The ability to use an independent Digital Rights Management system to protect and audit the content sold by trusted Digital Service Providers will now give them the confidence they need to enter the market on a commercial scale.

The benefits to content owners are significant, it allows the content owner to:

• Manage licensing rules economically and effectively
• Achieve a fair reward for their content
• Secure distribution, confident that their distribution partners are trustworthy
• Avoid piracy from people sharing the content without paying the originator

The confidence that content owners will gain from the Trusted DSP service should result in lots more mobile content entering the market with brand and rights owners experimenting with new forms of entertainment for mobiles.
