Munich, Germany – 30 October 2003 - At Telecoms Network Strategies in Barcelona, Siemens ICN will report on mechanism to combine the best of the Ethernet and the SDH world.

While TDM networks stand for security and top availability, Ethernet networks can claim flexibility and scalability. Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is a mechanism that combines the advantages of both networks. The use of RPR allows carriers to transmit Ethernet traffic in existing SDH networks and frees them from the costly burden to build new public Ethernet infrastructures. RPR over SDH allows the definition of class of service, offers guaranteed bandwidth and ensures carrier grade network availability. Yet the network remains flexible enough to support the characteristic needs of data transmission such as handling bursty traffic. This is achieved by statistical multiplexing.

As a layer 2 technology RPR is independent of upper and lower levels. It uses a double ring-type network comparable to FDDI. If faults occur RPR links the inner ring to the outer one and transmission is continued.

The presentation will be held on 5th November 2003 at 1:50 pm at Hotel Barcelo Sants. During the conference from 4th to 9th November Siemens ICN presents a live demonstration of the multiservice platform SURSPASS hiT 70xx series in the “LOBBYROOM”.

Siemens Information and Communication Networks (IC Networks) is a leading provider of network technology for enterprises, carriers and service providers. Its comprehensive portfolio - HiPath for enterprises, SURPASS for carriers - comprises IP-based convergence solutions for voice and data, a full range of solutions for broadband access, and optical transport networks. The Siemens Group thus provides complete solutions from a single source for the infrastructure of the Next Generation Network — optimized for a prompt return on investment and to open up new business opportunities for customers.
