News Release: FCT at Heart of First Canadian Residential Fuel Cell Demonstration

Fuel Cell Technologies Ltd. (FCT) is pleased to report that the Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, has announced that NRCan is contributing to a $260,000 project to demonstrate the first installation of a residential fuel cell in a house in Canada. FCT reports that its 5 kilowatt (kW) product will be the focus of this project. The installation will be at the Canadian Centre for Housing Technology (CCHT) at the National Research Council campus in Ottawa. Fuel Cell Technologies Ltd. is the operating subsidiary of publicly traded Fuel Cell Technologies Corporation (FCT). The contract for the FCT fuel cell unit is with the Buildings Group, CANMET Energy Technology Centre, Ottawa - a part of Natural Resources Canada. The FCT fuel cell unit is a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) power system that generates 5 kW of electricity and 6 kW of heat on site for use in the house. 'The facilities at the CCHT are world class. We look forward to seeing our 5 kW unit operating in the NRC's model house,'said Dr. John Stannard, FCT's President and CEO. 'Over the term of the demonstration, the expertise of CCHT personnel and monitoring capabilities of the CCHT facility should provide all parties with excellent feed-back on the operation of our residential fuel cell.'

The CCHT house is a technically sophisticated facility that can simulate occupancy. That is, a virtual family makes demands on the house as its members move between rooms, bathe, cook, do laundry, and otherwise use the house. This means that the fuel cell will have to respond automatically to the demands of the household in very real terms. There will be intensive testing during each of the winter, summer, and shoulder seasons, as if the house were occupied. The rest of the time the fuel cell will operate with little supervision and minimal monitoring.

FCT is a leading developer of small-scale power systems (1 kW to 50 kW) that provide on-site generation of electricity. FCT's SOFC power units can operate on any one of several readily available fuels to provide electricity and heat for stationary applications such as homes, small commercial enterprises, industrial applications, and remote sites. Concurrently, FCT continues to produce its world-leading aluminum energy fuel cell systems on a contractual basis for autonomous underwater vehicles, diver-heating systems, and stationary, remote-site applications. FCT's research and production facilities are located in Kingston, Canada. (www.fct.ca)
