News Release: Macrovision Obtains Interim Injunction To Prohibit Sales Of Circumvention Device

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — October 6, 2003 — Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), the leading provider of digital rights management and copy protection technologies announced today that its German lawyers, Nörr Stiefenhofer Lutz, obtained a temporary injunction, without an oral court hearing, in the District Court of Frankfurt, Germany, against the Frankfurt outlet of Media Markt TV-Hifi-Elektro GmbH prohibiting the ongoing sale of the Macro 2000 copy protection circumvention device. Macrovision was granted the injunction under the newly-enacted German Copyright Directive that prohibits copy protection circumvention devices in that country. The Macro 2000 strips off copy protection from protected DVDs and allows perfect video copies to be made from such content. “We are very pleased with the Court’s preliminary ruling,” said Colin Nunn, Macrovision’s Vice President of Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “This sends a strong message to the manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers of circumvention devices that we won’t tolerate the circumvention of Macrovision’s technology in Germany. Macrovision will firmly defend its copyright protection business in European countries that have implemented the Copyright Directive. Particularly noteworthy was the Court’s decision to grant standing to Macrovision, as the owner of the circumvented copy protection technology, to take action in its own right against the sale, distribution and possession for commercial purposes of circumvention devices.”
