OGC Members, MapInfo, Autodesk, Intergraph and Laser-Scan Team Up to Create Interoperability Kit Based on Oracle Spatial

September 17, 2003—MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS), a member of the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC), today announced a landmark initiative with other consortium members, Autodesk, Intergraph and Laser-Scan to facilitate and promote enterprise interoperability. A first-of-its-kind collaborative effort will provide customers with the ability to “mix and match” spatial tools and technologies from the four vendors via Oracle Spatial®, the industry’s leading open, enterprise database for spatial data. In addition, the companies are developing Interoperability Kits, also based on Oracle Spatial, which will enable customers to more easily share data among the vendor’s systems and take full advantage of the relative strengths of each vendor. For the first time, businesses can select the best technology that supports their operations. The Interoperability Kits will be available at no charge for customers seeking to build and leverage multi-vendor systems. The kits specifically address text and oriented points, features that have not been standardised and are currently handled differently by each vendor. MapInfo’s Interoperability Kit is expected to be available this autumn. The successful collaboration of this group of GIS vendors is meant to highlight a cooperative approach to furthering interoperability and the need for standards. This initial effort is intended to encourage other vendors to work with the group in OGC. “We are excited to see MapInfo and this group of OGC members engaged in this unified approach to interoperability processes using Oracle ", said Steve Hagan, Oracle's Vice President, Server Technologies. "Oracle Spatial is used around the globe in thousands of enterprise and national GIS, digital mapping and wireless location based services applications that are shared by and accessed through every major spatial and GIS partner technology. We believe that this initiative is an important milestone in the continuing evolution of open standards and will support continued development of this initiative within the OGC consensus process.”

Autodesk, Intergraph, Laser-Scan and MapInfo are committed to submitting the results of this effort into the standards setting programmes of the OGC.

“As a long-standing and active member of the Open GIS Consortium, MapInfo is one hundred percent dedicated to open standards and interoperability,” said Mark Cattini, president and CEO, MapInfo. “In February, MapInfo announced that its technology fully supports the White House’s Office for Homeland Security (OHS) call for open standards and IT interoperability in the fight against terrorism and the development of a successful homeland security strategy. Today’s news follows up on this pledge, enabling organisations to effectively pull together information from various sources whenever and wherever they need it.”

David Schell, President of OGC said, “I applaud the efforts of this group of OGC members. They have learned to work together in the spirit of cooperative development, which is the essence of the standards process. Such collaborative activities build the market and hold the potential for introducing valuable new specifications into the consortium's consensus process. We encourage the group to continue its collaborative efforts through a formal working group of the consortium's and look forward to their developing the broad member participation needed to create a useful standard. ”
