HSL is today announcing that the HSL 2.75G Femtocell is now involved in trials with a number of operators throughout the world. Mobile operators and fixed-line operators are involved in these trials and the scope of the trials include residential and office use of the HSL femtocell.

A number of operators trialling the HSL 2.75G Femtocell have expressed the opinion that deployment of femtocells for residential and office environments should not necessarily mean that 3G femtocells be used. The justification for the use of a 2G femtocell capable of high data rates using GPRS/EDGE instead of a 3G femtocell is the prevalence of WiFi in the home and office which can be cheaper than 3G and provides significantly higher data rates.
The HSL 2.75G Femtocell is capable of up to 14 simultaneous voice calls and GPRS/EDGE data rates up to 414Kb/s. With this capability the HSL “femtocell” is being considered for replacing picocells which are often significantly more expensive, physically more obtrusive and often more complex to deploy and manage. Furthermore, the HSL 2.75G Femtocell is the only GSM femtocell in the world with such capability that can be used by both 2G and 3G phones. 3G GSM femtocells typically do not support the 2G phones that continue to dominate in many markets throughout the world.

Trials kits are also now available for ordering from HSL to enable operators to self-trial or for use in trials coordinated with HSL.
