HSL Femtocell Developer Initiative Launched
Edinburgh, Scotland 12th February 2009
HSL is today officially launching the HSL Femtocell Developer Initiative that has been created to provide open access to HSL’s femtocell technology. Developers, OEMs, and both incumbent and new entrant femtocell vendors are able to build on HSL’s own femtocell technology.
The Developer Initiative has released three developer kits. All kits contain support and maintenance, and come with two femtocells included. The first kit provides a low cost entry point with a base station controller included and can be connected into existing mobile network infrastructure.
The second kit includes the specification of HSL’s Abis interface used to communicate between the femtocell and the core network, enabling integration of femtocells with a third party’s own system that may use an alternative architecture. The third kit gives low level access to the femtocell through a layer 1 API, enabling a third party to develop their own software to run on the femtocell and so add their own features and capabilities to the femtocell.
HSL’s 2.75G Femtocell hardware supports GSM, GPRS and EDGE, and can handle up to 14 simultaneous voice calls and 414Kb/s of data. There are options for synchronisation including integrated GPS, VTCXO and OCXO in addition to gaining synchronisation from surrounding base stations. Frequency support currently includes 1800MHz with 900MHz support later this year.
