Bugat Quietly Distributed in Recent LinkedIn Phishing Assault; Unlike Zeus Trojan, it is Less Well Known and Harder to Detect

NEW YORK, Oct. 12, 2010 –Trusteer, the leading provider of secure browsing services, today announced that its researchers have discovered a new version of the Bugat financial malware used to commit online fraud. Bugat was distributed in the recent phishing campaign targeting LinkedIn users, which was generally considered to be trying to infect machines with the more common Zeus Trojan. The emergence of this new version of Bugat appears to be an attempt by criminals to diversify their attack tools using a platform that is less well known and therefore harder to detect and block.

The latest figures on Internet traffic show that IP volumes soared by an amazing 62 per cent in the 12 months to the end of June 2010, rounding out an average (CAGR) traffic growth of 63 per cent for the years 2006 to 2010.

But, says network acceleration specialist Napatech, during the year to June 2010, Internet carriers responded to this growth by adding an extra 12.2 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity to give an annual capacity growth rate of 55 per cent - and a whopping 64 per cent of capacity growth in the years 2006 to 2010.

"Boosting Internet capacity by 64 per cent over the four years to June 2010 is good news for users, as it maintains the status quo of balancing capacity with usage, but the bottom line is that carriers are effectively throwing extra bandwidth at the problem, rather than looking at how the usage can be made more efficient," said Dan Joe Barry, Napatech's VP Marketing.

Rolling Meadows, IL, USA (5th October 2010)—Recent international regulations have placed the need for monitoring internal controls at the top of the boardroom agenda. Having controls in place is a basic business requirement, but it is no longer enough. Controls break down over time, they don’t always operate as designed, and they often fail to keep up with businesses as they, and their operations and strategies, change. Monitoring these internal controls allows management to be alerted quickly about factors that can have significant effects on their businesses.

Monitoring Internal Control Systems and IT, a new publication from ISACA, helps enterprises design and implement monitoring processes of key controls to reach their business goals and objectives.  It provides practical guidance on how to monitor information technology (IT) controls and how to apply IT to support and sustain monitoring activities. The publication also examines continuous monitoring and how it can lead to quicker detection of control failures, resulting in saved time and expense.
