Rolling Meadows, IL, USA (27 June 2011)—Marc Vael, CISA, CISM, CGEIT, CISSP, chief audit executive (CAE) at Smals in Belgium, was appointed director of ISACA—a global association serving 95,000 IT governance, assurance and security professionals in 160 countries—at its World Congress: INSIGHTS 2011 conference in Washington DC, USA, today.
Founded in 1969, ISACA develops international standards for information systems auditing and control, provides education and training, and administers the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT), and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) designations. Additionally, ISACA developed and continually updates COBIT, the internationally accepted framework for governance of enterprise IT.
“Marc’s knowledge and enthusiasm will be a real asset to the ISACA board,” said Ken Vander Wal, CISA, CPA, who was elected international president of ISACA today. “He is a talented and experienced professional who is committed to helping ISACA members connect with one another and significantly benefit from the resources ISACA offers to them.”
As CAE of Smals, a large Belgian IT organization with more than 1,800 people working for the Belgian federal government, Vael is responsible for all internal auditing. He has more than 15 years of experience in evaluating, designing, implementing and monitoring solutions on risk and information security management, incident and business continuity management, data protection/privacy, and IT audit. An ISACA member for more than 15 years, he is currently also vice president of the ISACA Belgium Chapter, chair of ISACA’s Knowledge Board and Cloud Computing Task Force, member of ISACA’s Strategic Advisory Council, and past chair of the ISACA Communities Committee. Vael has been a visiting lecturer at Antwerp Management School (AMS) since 1997 and a deputy member of the Flemish Privacy Commission since 2010. In his spare time, Vael runs marathons and has successfully finished 10 official marathons, including the Big 5 (New York, Chicago, Boston, London and Berlin).
“As a long-time volunteer and advocate for ISACA, I am very honored to serve as a director of the association and help ISACA achieve its primary mission: to help IT and business professionals around the world attain trust in, and value from, information systems,” said Vael.
In addition to Vael, one other director was appointed and seven other IT professionals were elected to ISACA leadership positions. Allan Boardman, CISA, CISM, CGEIT, CRISC, CA, CISSP, vice president at JP Morgan Chase (United Kingdom), was appointed director. Ken Vander Wal, CISA, CPA, partner (retired) at Ernst & Young (USA), was elected international president. Elected as international vice presidents were Christos Dimitriadis, CISA, CISM, head of information security at INTRALOT S.A. (Greece); Greg Grocholski, CISA, corporate auditor at The Dow Chemical Company (USA); Tony Hayes, CGEIT, AFCHSE, CHE, FACS, FCPA, FIIA, associate director-general of the Department of Communities in the Queensland Government (Australia); Niraj Kapasi, CISA, FCA, IT auditor and director for Kapasi Bangad Tech Consulting Pvt. Ltd. (India); Jeff Spivey, CRISC, CPP, PSP, director of Security Risk Management Inc. (SRM) (USA); and Jo Stewart-Rattray, CISA, CISM, CGEIT, director of information security at RSM Bird Cameron (Australia).
