Avecto – the leader in windows privilege management, are hosting a live webinar featuring Gartner’s Neil MacDonald. The hour long webinar

‘Best Practices for Removing End-User Admin Rights on Windows’

Date: Tuesday June 19th, 2012

Time: 10am EDT (3pm BST)

Removing administrator rights from end users is one of the single most-effective ways to improve overall security posture, but it must be well-planned to avoid common pitfalls and a failed project.

Paul Kenyon, Avecto’s COO clarified why this subject is so important: “If users log on to systems with admin rights then the system is at much greater risk from malware attack. However, users with too few privileges can be costly to the business, as they will require extensive over the shoulder support. Balancing the security needs and performance requirements of the business against the expectations and deliverables of users can be problematic.”

It is this fine line that Neil will help webinar attendees grasp. Referring to recent Gartner research he will explain why removing administrator rights from end users is one of the single most-effective ways to improve overall security posture. He will also offer best practice guidelines to make sure doing so is well-planned if common pitfalls and a failed project are to be avoided.

According to a Gartner report by Neil MacDonald and Michael A. Silver entitled Best Practices for Removing End-User Administrator Rights on Windows [G00211136], Gartner state

“We continue to see interest from clients to exert higher levels of control over enterprise end-user Windows environments, with the most common projects involving the removal of administrator rights from at least a portion of their user populations. The shift to running Windows users with "standard user" rights must be well-planned, or risk increased costs, service desk calls, end-user dissatisfaction, and, ultimately, a failed project.”
