The Symposium gathered exhibitors, panels of experts and investment professionals to exchange knowledge and insight on mining and natural resource related markets.
The event featured exhibitors and panels on precious and industrial metal markets, investment and the junior mining industry. A strong theme throughout the conference was the urbanization and ongoing development of cities around the globe and the subsequent increase in demand for metal and the significance of strong reserves. Keynote speaker David Garafalo, President and CEO of Goldcorp Inc. (TSX: $G.TO, NYSE: $GG), stressed the importance of investment in exploration to foster supplies that can cope with the rise in demand.
Another Keynote speaker, Robert Friedland, Founder and Executive Chairman of Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX: $IVN, OTCQX: $IVPAF), emphasized the potential of copper in particular, noting its significance with regard to industrialization and its role in green technologies.
“Copper is absolutely critical for renewable energy,” he said. Friedland also championed investment in other industrial metals such as zinc and cobalt.
Brett Heath, President, Director and CEO of Metalla Royalty and Streaming Ltd. (CSE: $MTA, OTCQB: $EXCFF), praised the symposium’s quality of participants and its warm atmosphere.
“The investor attendees here are definitely ones that are pretty influential in the mining sector,” he said. “There’s a lot of capital that can be raised here, there’s a lot of new investors, and it’s a much more intimate show than the typical mining show you see.”
Rob Henderson, President and CEO of Amerigo Resources Ltd. (TSX: $ARG), said that the caliber of speakers and exhibitors put on by Sprott are what keeps his company attending year after year.
“We make a point of coming to this conference, and have been for the last 10 years or so because you do get the very best in the industry,” he said.
This was echoed by Dev Randhawa, Founding Chairman and CEO of Fission Uranium Corp. (TSX-V: $FCU, OTCQX: $FCUUF), who endorsed the Sprott conference over free alternatives, based on the strength of its speakers.
“If there’s one conference you should go to all year, this is it. Instead of going to all the other conferences which are free, but you don’t get the quality of speakers,” he said. “At the end of the day, great decisions require great information.”
