News Release: Golden Star Agrees Gold Exploration Joint Ventures in Sierra Leone and Mali

Golden Star Resources Ltd. (Amex: GSS) (TSX: GSC) is pleased to announce that it has entered into two joint venture agreements to carry out exploration in Sierra Leone and Mali, respectively.

Firstly, Golden Star has entered into a joint venture agreement with Mano River Resources Inc ('Mano River') to carry out gold exploration on Mano River's six prospecting licenses in Sierra Leone, which total approximately 500 square kilometers (km2). Under the terms of this agreement, Golden Star may spend US$6.0 million over four years to earn a 51% interest in Mano River's Pampana, Sonfon and Nimini properties. In addition, subject to certain elections of Mano River, Golden Star may sole fund a feasibility study to increase its interest to 65% and, subject to a further election of Mano River, Golden Star may fund a commercial mine development to increase its interest to a maximum of 85%. In addition to its minimum 15% participating interest, Mano River will retain a 2% NSR royalty in the properties. The agreement is subject to Golden Star's final due diligence, the approval of the Sierra Leone government and definitive documentation. Completion of the definitive documentation is expected by January 2004 and exploration work is expected to commence promptly thereafter.

In a separate development, Golden Star has entered into a joint venture agreement with Geo Services International Ltd. ('GSI') to carry out gold exploration on GSI's 250 km2 Mininko gold property in southeast Mali. Under the terms of the agreement, Golden Star may spend up to US$2.6 million to earn a 51% interest in Mininko. In addition, subject to certain elections of GSI and the Mali government, Golden Star may increase its interest to 82.5% by sole funding the development of the project. The agreement is subject to definitive documentation and the approval of the Mali government. Work on the property is expected to commence in late 2003.

Peter Bradford, President and CEO of Golden Star, commented, 'This is an excellent opportunity for Golden Star to grow its business in West Africa. We are excited about the gold exploration potential of Sierra Leone and Mali, and in particular the potential of Mano River's properties and the GSI property. Equally importantly, we believe developments in Sierra Leone are creating a more positive business environment, and we are already comfortable with the situation in Mali.'

Sierra Leone - Mano River

Mano River is listed on the London AIM market and has focused on the exploration for and discovery of world-class gold and diamond deposits in the Archaean terrain of the highly prospective, under-explored, West African Mano River Union (MRU) countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

-- Pampana Property: is located 150 kilometers east of Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown and comprises two contiguous prospecting licenses totaling 140 km2, targeting crustal-scale gold mineralized shear zones across the southern end of the Sula Mountains greenstone gold belt. The property includes the Yirisen gold project, which is a 3.75 km long north-east trending gold system, open along strike, with the zone of mineralization extending to 200 meters width. Mano River has previously announced the results of soil geochem and trenching work.

-- Sonfon Property: is located 175 kilometers northeast of Freetown and comprises two contiguous exploration licenses totaling 256 km2 across the northern end of the Sula Mountains greenstone gold belt. As previously announced by Mano River, a 3,000 meter by 300 meter gold anomaly within a high-grade, gold-bearing stockwork vein system has been determined by trenching.

-- Nimini Property: is located 250 kilometers east of Freetown and comprises two prospecting licenses totaling 117 km2 of the Nimini Hills and target a zone of major shearing and folding coincident with gold mineralization. The Nimini Property includes the Komahun gold deposit where past drilling and trenching has returned encouraging results.

Mali - Geo Services International

GSI is a private company, which holds the title to the 250 km2 Mininko property located approximately 250 kilometers southeast of Bamako, in the Morila - Syama corridor within the SE Mali Birimian belt. In 1980, a UNDP geochemical program identified the Mininko Property as containing the third largest gold soil anomaly in Mali. Later work by the UNDP, BHP and Newmont has confirmed a 100ppb geochemical anomaly, which extends over an area of approximately 1,000 meters by 600 meters.
