VeriFone And AtosEuronext Payment Solutions Gain French CB5.2 EMV Approval For Pilot

Pilot approval opens French EMV market for VeriFone’s Best-in Class SC 5000 PIN Pad

PARIS, France, November 19, 2003 – VeriFone Inc., the worldwide leader in electronic payment solutions, today announced at Cartes 2003 that the EFT solution which comprises SoftPOS - integrated Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) software for electronic cash registers - and the SC 5000 PINpad has received CB5.2 EMV pilot approval. VeriFone and its French partner, AtosEuronext Payment Solutions (AEPS), have worked closely together to upgrade the existing solution to comply with the CB5.2 standard. The entire solution has received the pilot approval by GIE Cartes Bancaires, which is the final milestone before certification, and so opens the market for pilot deployment of VeriFone hardware EMV solutions in France. This approval follows the EMV Level 2 certification gained by AtosEuronext Payment Solutions for the same solution.

SoftPOS integrated EFT software has already numerous installations throughout France. The new solution provides the existing installed base of SoftPOS users with an easy and cost-effective migration path to the new French standard, CB5.2, which incorporates EMV specifications.

In addition to full compliance with CB5.2, the SC 5000 is a plug and play device, enabling it to be integrated with other integrated EFT software available in the French market. The SC 5000 is protected by a broad range of software-based security features and adheres to Triple DES (3DES) encryption standards being adopted by the payment industry to raise the level of fraud protection for PIN-based debit transactions.

Jean Marc Honoré, AtosEuronext Deputy CEO, Payment Solutions, commented, “We are delighted to have received this key certification for our solution, which combines AEPS’ popular EFT software with an industry-leading product - the SC 5000. We look forward to making this solution available to the French market.”

Commenting on today’s announcement, Nigel Bidmead, EMEA Managing Director for VeriFone said, “The huge success of the SC 5000 since its launch last year is a testament to its best-in-class status, making it the optimal device to support the international adoption of EMV.”

The SC 5000 PINpad provides the easiest way to upgrade existing terminals or electronic cash registers to support EMV requirements, and is the only peripheral device chosen as part of the Visa Smart Breakthrough Acceptance Device program designed to accelerate EMV throughout the world.

The SC 5000’s robustness has been tested to conform to the international mechanical test standard IEC 60068-2-32. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the leading global organisation that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. These serve as a basis for national standardisation and as references when drafting international tenders and contracts. An independent testing laboratory, Laboratoire Central des Industries Electriques (LCIE) in France, conducted the tests.

The SC 5000 features an integrated smart card reader with support for 0, 2, or 4 Security Access Module (SAM) slots to enable support for a broad range of smart card-based loyalty and electronic purse schemes. It also offers an optional built-in magnetic-stripe card reader. The SC 5000 is PED-compliant and offers a range of security protections including tamper-detection circuitry, VeriShield file authentication, and the flexibility to develop and support virtually any key-management scheme.
