At the Financial Times World Telecommunications Conference in London, Siemens ICN will report on challenges the world of telecommunication will be facing in the near future.

European and US telecommunication operators have lately been focusing on improving their flexibility through growth in free cash flow and by reducing debt. At the same time, positive steps have been taken to upgrade the infrastructure and apply attractive pricing models. However, not much progress has been made in the service field. End users are still looking at a fragmented communication experience, the passivity of the TV audience remains unchanged, and video deployment has yet to reach the market. The same applies for small and medium enterprises, still unable to find tailored service offerings. Worst of all, operators see their traditional voice business being cannibalized by VoIP and mobile phones. Basic network service is becoming a commodity and value added services are increasing in importance.

To solve these problems it is crucial in the first instance to develop service-ready telecom networks. These will enable carriers to offer value added services in which end-user control of services will become characteristic, leading to personalized offerings and individual bundling of services. From an operator’s standpoint the networks must therefore be more consistent, uniform, secure and convenient to handle.

The presentation will be held on 1st December 2003 at 2:15 p.m. at the Inter-Continental hotel (London).
