Kirkland Lake Gold Inc.: New South Central Zone Now Extends 450 Feet Up-Dip of 5300 Level
Drill Hole 53-1199 Returns 2.21 Ounces Per Ton of Gold over 12.4 feet
Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. (Company) (TSX:KGI)(AIM:KGI) is pleased to announce an update on exploration drilling testing part of the South Mine Complex (SMC). The SMC consists of 15 or more mineralized zones, one of which is the New South Central Zone.
Recent exploration and definition drilling has extended the New South Central Zone to the -5095 elevation, 450 feet up-dip of the -5265 elevation. During this drilling, multiple stacked mineralized zones have been intersected above the New South Central Zone. The Company is currently engaging six exploration drills on the property to actively test the South Mine Complex and other targets.
"These 21 drill holes at a spacing of 30 to 40 feet both up-dip and along strike have quickly and consistently filled in a previously poorly understood area of the South Mine Complex," said Stewart Carmichael, Chief Exploration Geologist. He added, "We've also intersected new hanging wall zones up to 100 feet above the New South Central Zone, however further definition drilling is required to verify geometry and continuity of these hanging wall systems."
The highlights of this recent drilling include:
- Drill hole 53-1199 intersected the New South Central Zone and assayed 2.21 ounces of gold per ton (opt) uncut (1.55 opt cut) over a true width of 12.4 feet and included 11.78 opt over a true width of 1.0 feet. This intersection is at the -5155 foot elevation (see Figure 1).
- Drill hole 53-1206 intersected the New South Central Zone at the -5095 elevation and assayed 1.45 opt over a true width of 4.6 feet. This elevation is the highest ore grade hole intersection in the New South Central Zone to date and is 190 feet up-dip of previously released drill hole 53-532 (see Press Release dated May 13, 2008).
- At least two new hanging wall zones have been intersected in many of the latest drill holes. These tend to be narrow high-grade zones as indicated by drill holes 53-945 which assayed 10.46 opt over a core length of 1.3 feet and hole 53-1236 which assayed 6.07 opt over a core length of 2.3 feet. Infill drilling will be required before continuity of these hanging wall zones can be ascertained.
- The intersections on the Lower D North Zone are close-spaced and within existing reserve blocks and are not considered to be significant in the context of this release.
The figure referred to in this release may be viewed at the Company's website, www.klgold.com and will provide context to the above statements. Figure 1 is a plan view showing the latest drilling results (to see Figure 1 please click on: http://media3.marketwire.com/docs/kgi120.pdf).

About the Company
The Company purchased the Macassa Mine and the 1,500 ton per day mill along with four former producing gold properties - Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore and Wright Hargreaves - in December 2001. These properties, which have historically produced some 22 million ounces of gold, extend over seven kilometres between the Macassa Mine on the west and Wright Hargreaves on the east and, for the first time, are being developed and explored under one owner. This camp is located in the Abitibi Southern Greenstone Belt of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada.
The results of the Company's underground diamond drilling program have been reviewed, verified (including sampling, analytical and test data) and compiled by the Company's geological staff (which includes a 'qualified person', Stewart Carmichael, P.Geo., the Company's Chief Exploration Geologist, for the purpose of National Instrument 43-101, Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects, of the Canadian Securities Administrators). Mr. Carmichael also supervised the preparation of the information that forms the basis of the technical disclosure in this release.
The Company has implemented a quality assurance and control (QA/QC) program to ensure sampling and analysis of all exploration work is conducted in accordance with the best possible practices. The drill core is sawn in half with one half of the core samples shipped to the Swastika Laboratories in Swastika, Ontario, Polymet Resources Inc. in Cobalt, Ontario. The other half of the core is retained for future assay verification. Other QA/QC includes the insertion of blanks, and the regular re-assaying of pulps and rejects at alternate certified labs. Gold analysis is conducted by fire assay using atomic absorption or gravimetric finish. The laboratory re-assays at least 10% of all samples and additional checks may be run on anomalous values.
The Company's Macassa Mine Property is the subject of reserve reports prepared by Glenn R. Clark, P.Eng., entitled:
- Review of Resources and Reserves of the New South Mine Complex, Macassa Mine, Kirkland Lake, Ontario dated August 25, 2007.
- Review of Resources and Reserves of Macassa Mine, Kirkland Lake, Ontario dated July 15, 2008.
Both of these technical reports have been filed on SEDAR (www.sedar.com).
